Otto-Wilhelm MERTEN

Gene Therapy and Vector Manufacturing Specialist

Otto-Wilhelm MERTEN has a degree in biotechnology (Ph.D.) from the University of Life Sciences in Vienna (Inst. of Applied Microbiology, Prof. H. Katinger), holds an HDR at the University of Evry/Val-d’Essonne and is Visiting Professor at ITQB/UNL in Lisbon. His scientific activities brought him from the Sandoz Forschungsinstitut in Vienna to the Institut Pasteur in Paris, to Généthon in Evry and recently to Miltenyi Biotec. With respect to LV and AAV vectors he was and still is involved in the development and optimisation of production methods for their routine manufacturing as well as in the development of novel characterisation methods. In context of his expertise in animal cell culture technology he was a long term member of the Executive Committee of the European Society of Animal Cell Technology (ESACT) and its chairman from 2001 to 2005. Today he is honorary member of ESACT, as well as member of scientific societies in the field of gene and cell therapy (ESGCT, ASGCT).
